Good morning, good afternoon and good evening. This is Frederick cabanas the head English teacher at SAA Global in Singapore. Today I want to teach you how to order lunch from a local favourite and my favourite economy rice.
First thing you have to understand about Singapore is that we have food courts and Hawker centre they’re almost the same except for two big differences the first thing is a food court is indoor with air conditioning a hawker centre is outdoors no air conditioning.
Singapore is hot trust me air conditioning is good but you pay for it. Whatever dish you would order at the hawker centre the food court expect to pay one or two dollars more.
The next thing you have to decide is when you go to your veggie rice some places call it economy rice or mixed veggie is do you want them to take away in which case to put in a takeaway package so you can eat it somewhere else or you’ll let them know I’m eating it here or having my dish here.
Once they know which ones you want you then let them know I want more rice extra rice or less rice mean half of the portion. If you’re lucky you can get brown rice not many places have them but if you do you have to do it, the healthier choice then you can choose any dish that you want you can have fried dishes you can have meat dishes and of course the veggie dishes.
If the meat you can expect to find chicken, pork, fish fillets. If you’re lucky you can find squid or clams or whole fish. Whole fish can pay the most because usually, the meat can be some sort of upgrade in your price but easily you can find twenty dishes to choose from.
Singaporean and foreigners like them because you’re paying from three dollars to six dollars for your meal. Which is easily ½ or 1/3 the price of going McDonald’s for that extra meal. I hope you have a great evening and I’ll see you next time.
